The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Good Brows

I know I said we’d talk eyebrows a looong time ago but, I was letting them fade so I could make a video for you. Then, life happened and I was meeting a hottie for drinks and I had bushy faded brows. So, I went and had my gal get them in shape so I didn’t look crazy on a date.   *I do not recommend getting your brows done the day you have a date but Cici is a miracle worker. Check the video out here!

Long story short my brows are pretty great and I don’t even have to do much to them to accomplish this. That is because I recently fell in love with brow tinting. So, here are some answers to your questions about it. If you have any more questions feel free to leave them in the comments or get in touch!

What is brow tinting?

It’s sort of like hair color for your eyebrows. Except, in this case they use vegetable dye that is demi-permanent. That means it fades out over time. So, if you don’t like it you are certainly, not stuck with it.

I have dark eyebrows, why would I tint them?

I too have dark brows my friend but this service fills in the lighter hairs and the baby hairs and gives fullness. You will thank me and your esthetician, when you are spending way less time filling those bad boys in. If you even need to fill them in at all.

How long is this going to take?

Honestly, only a few minutes! I think it actually takes longer for my wax than the tint but then again I’m kinda hairy.

Can’t I just tint my own eyebrows?

I’m sure you could although I don’t encourage it. I’m pretty brave with DIY and at home beauty but even I don’t tint my own brows. They are after all, very close to your eyeballs. Who wants to mess with that?

Any products I should avoid?

Yes! Cici says to avoid oil for a day or two to help preserve the color and to avoid alcohol (topically) for a day after your tint and wax. If you get those little bumps after a wax, I recommend avoiding putting makeup or concealer on right after and let your raw skin breathe.

I hope this helps! Now go get that tint so you can say you really did wake up like that. 🙂 If you are in the Denver-Metro area go see Cici at the Benefit Brow Bar in Belmar, she’s AMAZING!

Aging with Grace

In a world that is obsessed with beauty and looking young it’s easy to get caught up in all of that hype. We are constantly bombarded with the concept that being young is beautiful and wrinkles (along with other signs of age) are a bad thing and should be fought with a vengeance.

What if we *gasp* embraced beauty at every age and accepted our wrinkles and grey hair?

This of course, is not a concept I am used to practicing or even thinking. I am a woman who has been coloring her hair for years partly for the fun in changing things up and partly to cover all of my pesky grays. In my defense, I was blessed with platinum silver highlights at the ripe age of 19. I also am a woman who has been so aware of aging that I started wearing wrinkle cream at age 17. For the record, if you DO want to stay youthful for many years to come starting early is extremely helpful.

My mother is coming up on her 5oth birthday this year and like many women her age, her skin has changed a bit and she needed a new skincare regimen. She turned to her darling daughter for guidance and I assumed that her number one priority would be anti-aging.

It was a complete shock when I dug a little deeper with her and she said, “I look pretty good for my age. So, I just want to maintain during the aging process…” I am so used to women focusing mostly on anti aging that it never crossed my mind that she would care about anything else as much as looking as young as possible. After all, isn’t that what we are force fed day in and day out when we see all the glossy magazines and TV ads? Younger is better, right? Maybe not.

It didn’t take long for the initial shock to wear off because inspiration took over. Here is a woman who is facing an age that many women dread and yet, she was content. Happy even. And just like that, I got it.

It isn’t about trying to look twenty it’s about good skin. Like my mother, many of us are no longer in our twenties anymore but that doesn’t mean we can’t take care of the skin we have now. It was an inspiring moment that perhaps, wasn’t meant to be. The idea that we might love ourselves in our own skin and simply take care of that skin instead of believing all of the hype. And when you think about it wrinkles are kind of nice. They are evidence of a long happy life with lots of laughter.

Who knew that a person could actually age gracefully and feel beautiful doing it… that is beauty.

How to Get Rid of Blackheads Forever

Remember those strips you would put on your nose and after a few minutes you’d peel them off and they ripped out your blackheads? I used to love those things! So gross yet, somehow fascinating and gratifying but, for me it never really solved the problem. My blackheads always came back or the strip wouldn’t get all of them in the first place.

Using quick fixes like those don’t really solve the problem. It’s like wearing spanks when you want to lose weight. It’ll work short term but the reality is you need to make a change to your routine to get long term results. In this instance you need to change up your skincare regimen.

Step One: Exfoliate

How you do this is entirely up to you. There are so many exfoliating products out there that the world is your oyster and you should have no excuse for missing this step. (Yes, a Clarisonic counts.) I love a good sugar scrub or peel! The important thing is that you regularly exfoliate 1-2 times per week just don’t over do it!

Step Two: Deep Cleanse

This is where a good mask will come in to play. I love charcoal masks for banishing blackheads because they are meant to get deep into the pores and suck out all the impurities without completely drying out your skin. Any deep cleansing mask will work so, pick one that you love. 1-2 times a week for this step as well.

Once you have added these steps to your usual skincare regimen you are going to see results within a week or two. And once those blackheads are gone, they’ll stay that way. You will also have radiant glowing skin as an added bonus. Win-win. 🙂

Some of My Favorites:

  • Freeman Beauty; Charcoal and Black Sugar Polishing Mask
  • Origins; Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask
  • Arcona; Magic Black Ice Mask
  • St. Ives; Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub

Post-workout Beauty Hack

I am the most forgetful person on the planet, I swear. You probably already knew that but I already forgot that I’ve told you. (Ba-dum-bum-tss.) This leaves me with an all too familiar feeling of missing something. Did I grab my keys? Phone? Socks for after my workout? Did I feed the dog? On any given day something will fall through the cracks and I’m left scrambling. Do you know that feeling?

That being said, I do also try my best to always improve myself in any ways I deem necessary. I love tools like calendars and list making apps. They really are game changers when you have a busy life like we all do!

On any given day something will fall through the cracks and I’m left scrambling.

The other day I was running late and threw my gym bag together in a rush. Mistake. Yes, I could have planned the night before but I didn’t. I never do. Who even has time for that? Sometimes I’m home with little time to wash my face and put some PJ’s on just so that I can get 5 hours of sleep, only to rush off and do it all over again. That is my real life and my days only contain 24 hours, some of which I need to use for sleep. So, I was rushing and shockingly, forgot a few (okay most of) my beauty essentials to look presentable for the day. In all honesty, I had 8 lipsticks and a tube of mascara with me. Now, I may just be the MacGyver of makeup because I did pull it off but it’s certainly not a look I would recreate.

In that moment, I devised a plan so that I may never be in that silly predicament again. I know you can wear lipstick on your cheeks as a blush but that doesn’t mean it’s ideal. So, here’s what I do now… you know all of those travel sized items that your favorite makeup and hair brands sell? Well, I started buying the minis in the same items I have in my regular sizes but, I don’t exactly use them for travel. I created a gym makeup bag with my staples for getting ready. So, now I’ve got hairspray, foundation, mascara and even concealer at the ready, in my bag. I even threw in my favorite day fragrance roller ball so that I will smell great too.

It’s a really nice feeling to know that I have everything I need and I can stop worrying about forgetting something important.  I may still forget my socks but it’s progress. I still have all of my full sizes at home. I’m left with one less thing to do in the mornings and no longer do I need to lug a heavy overstuffed bag of products to the gym.

Why didn’t I think of this sooner?  🙂

A Fragrance for Any Occasion

The other day I was at work in a deep squat position, tidying up some perfume bottles when one of the girls I work with approached me. Jenna looked very serious when she said firmly, “You said something to me the other day that really resonated with me.” To be honest, I was slightly nervous as to what she was going to say next. Jenna is a no nonsense kind of woman with a lot of sass. Hesitantly, I replied with a calm “Oh, really? And what was that?” As it turns out, she had loved one of my personal beauty rules and had decided to apply it to her own life. The advice? Every one should have a fragrance wardrobe.

Your first fragrance in your wardrobe will be something you absolutely love to wear EVERY DAY. This does not mean you will wear it every day but, it should be something you won’t get sick of wearing regularly. I call this fragrance my signature scent and I believe every woman should have one.

Next, you need to have a scent for night. You know those nights when you go out dancing with your best friends or have drinks with that special (or not so special) someone on Saturday night. Think sensual, deep scents that will get you noticed.

Finally, you’ll want to throw a wildcard into the mix to keep things interesting. It can get monotonous wearing the same old thing day in and day out. Once a week or whenever the mood strikes you, throw on your wildcard fragrance. Go for something you love but is outside your comfort zone!

Once you’ve got the basics you can keep on building, just like you would with a wardrobe of clothing. The sky is the limit!

My fragrance wardrobe:

  • Dior, J’adore is my signature scent
  • YSL ,Black Opium is my night scent
  • Marc Jacobs, Decadence is my wildcard

I told you mine, now you tell me yours. Which fragrances will you have in your wardrobe?

The Skincare Step You’re Missing!

There is always a new skincare trend waiting for us around the corner. Or at least it feels that way sometimes. I tend to not buy into the hype on most occasions because, well, skin is skin and until they come up with some new science… The products that work, work. The ingredients that don’t are just fluff. Plain and simple. My disdain for skincare trends is likely why I missed the boat on this important little step and why you may have also.

Until recently, my skin has been under attack by a well known enemy… POLLUTION! I think about pollution in every way except my skin and yet, it makes the most sense that my skin is the first thing to worry about. Our skin is a barrier to protect us from the elements. You know… things like sharp objects, germs, but also rays from the sun and yep, pollution. The trouble of living in the city is that pollution is unavoidable and much more prevalent. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that wrinkles and age spots occur more often in women living in urban/high pollution areas. So, lovely, we must protect ourselves!

Okay, duh but how?

Get cozy with antioxidants. There is a lot of research out there on this and it all points to using antioxidants against pollution much like you use sunscreen against sun damage. The one snafu is that some scientists say to ingest Vitamins C & E while others say to use it topically. I say, do both. That way you are covered. I happen to use a moisturizer that protects against sun AND pollution because, well I’m lazy and 3 steps is just too many. 🙂

Now, here’s the annoying part… I know you are already washing your face everyday. And I know you know the importance of washing your face at night. Especially, since we wear makeup and it’s bad to sleep in it. Here’s the thing, it’s even more important to wash your face every night even when you’re makeup free. Turns out, all of that pollution is leaving a nasty film on your face. Gross right? And the experts agree that AHA washes are best for us pollution battle-ing city gals.

Who knew right? Well, maybe you did… let me know below!

How I quit running, ate a cheeseburger and lost 15 lbs.

I know what you’re thinking, ‘You must be one of those people who is naturally skinny so you can eat whatever you want and never exercise.’ I WISH!

When I turned 30 I was already a big health nut but I also became vegetarian for both health and environmental reasons. I also loved to run. I even competed in a few local races. The city is a great place to maintain an active lifestyle because I don’t need to drive so, I walk more than the average American. Turning 30 also proved that whole getting older and fatter thing that people warned me about. I was granted with the infinite wisdom of the universe but was also cursed with an even slower metabolism seemingly, over night.

Now, I am not a person of great stature. I’m am quite short so, 15 lbs. was quite a lot to put on in a short time. I knew something had to change before it became 30 lbs and then 60 lbs. I remember thinking how it sucked being 30 because now I had to work twice as hard to maintain the same results of being in my 20’s. Life is so unfair.

At my brother’s wedding in Spring 2015

“I believe this was a major component to my success in really becoming my most fit self.”

Did I really quit running? Yes! The only time I run anymore is to catch a bus. I have always had a love/hate relationship with running and I ultimately landed on hate. Even when I would run and enjoy it, I always dreaded doing it. That is not exactly the exemplary way to weight loss success. You have to enjoy whatever you are doing or you won’t stick with it. I love bicycling! I was already a regular bicyclist so, I use that for my daily cardio. In the bad weather I started doing cycling classes which, turned out to be really fun! I also found a love for weight lifting. I believe this was a major component to my success in really becoming my most fit self. It helps you on so many levels! I felt stronger, I looked leaner and my other activities were easier to do. It also just made me feel like a bad ass.

At my aunt’s wedding Summer 2016

Did I really eat a cheeseburger? Um, to be honest… I’ve had quite a few cheeseburgers. They are probably my favorite food. After a year of vegetarianism I had a craving for meat and I indulged. I never looked back. Do I eat a burger every day? No, that’s ridiculous. I do eat at least one a month though (probably two if I’m being honest). I really, really love cheeseburgers. I genuinely believe that eating meat again helped me to lose weight because protein is especially filling so, I was eating less overall. On a regular day I’m typically eating something healthy but I do like to indulge here and there to keep myself happy and sane. Who wants to be thin and miserable anyway?

Did you notice a difference in your metabolism or other changes in your body once you turned 30?
